WELCOME TO THE LAKE

Tully Lake History

Tully Lake has a long history - going back millions of years!  Our memories are more recent.  While our family has been on the lake for 40+ years, a good number of our guests have been coming to Tully Lake for many years as well and longer.  Local history tells us that a hundred years ago vacationers used to come to Tully from New York City for the peace, quiet and solitude that we still enjoy today.

Legend has it that the Hobart Hotel occupied the property that our home is located on.  While we have not been able to completely verify that fact, local lore is that visitors would row across the lake to visit the Hobart, and "unlicensed" hotel where you could obtain alcohol.  According to Freida Evans, a local neighbor, the hotel supposedly burned in 1911 or 1912.  We will continue to research this story.

Many of the photos are from the personal collection of Steve Keller of Oxford, OH,  a long time visitor to Tully Lake (and recent guest).  Steve's contributions are most appreciated!

Enjoy this trip down memory lane!

Tully Valley - Looking North

In the early 1900's, the salt industry prospered in the southern part of Tully Valley.  This shows the many derricks that covered the valley floor.  Water from the lakes such as Tracy Pond, Gatehouse Pond, and Tully Lake was pumped to the many derricks and down into the beds of salt where the salt was dissolved.  The brine was then pumped out and allowed to flow north to Solvay where the brine was left in open beds to evaporate and leave the salt.
